Find Gold Ore in the Cave of Echoes, reach it with Mermaid form, mine it with an Iron Pickaxe, and unlock Rose Quartz in the Crystal Cave.
Moonlight Peaks Mining Guide — Gold Ore & Crystal Cave
Quick answer: Gold Ore is in the Cave of Echoes in Misty Shores. The earliest documented deposits are across the cave's underwater lake, so you need Mermaid form to reach them and an Iron Pickaxe to break them. The Crystal Cave is a different mine west of Fiona's home in Moonlit Pines; a Copper Pickaxe opens its entrance, but Rose Quartz nodes require an Iron Pickaxe.
Mining Areas and Tool Gates
| Material | Where to find it | First documented Pickaxe gate |
|---|---|---|
| Copper Ore | Cave of Echoes | Starting Pickaxe |
| Iron Ore | Cave of Echoes | Copper Pickaxe |
| Gold Ore | Cave of Echoes, beyond movement-form routes | Iron Pickaxe; Mermaid form for the earliest verified route |
| Rose Quartz | Crystal Cave; later also the Catacombs | Copper Pickaxe opens the cave; Iron Pickaxe mines the pink nodes |
| Moon Crystal | Crystal Cave | Save the first one and follow the current node prompt for the required tier |
The Pickaxe requirement and the route requirement are separate. An Iron Pickaxe can break Gold Ore, but it does not carry you across the lake or over an inaccessible ledge.
Where Is the Cave of Echoes?
Complete A Bridge Too Far to open Misty Shores. The Cave of Echoes is in the southwest of that area, beyond Ambrosia Mansion and the graveyard. It is the main mine used for Copper, Iron, and later Gold.
The cave also contains Alina's Vampster den, fishing water, dig spots, and the large eastern bell used in Elvira's Treasure Hunt. Bring food and leave several bag slots open before a long mining trip.
How to Get Gold Ore
The earliest route currently documented with screenshots is across the underwater lake in the far section of the Cave of Echoes:
- unlock Mermaid form through the Luna Bay story route;
- upgrade the Pickaxe to Iron at Ridge's Howling Hammer;
- enter the Cave of Echoes and continue to the lake in its far section;
- transform into Mermaid form and swim to the strip of land on the opposite side;
- switch back and mine the Gold Ore deposits with the Iron Pickaxe.
Bonus Action verified this lake route on July 19. Its guide expects additional Gold deposits to require Bat form but had not yet unlocked that branch. GameRant separately describes eastern deposits reached by Mermaid form and northern deposits reached by Bat form. Treat the Mermaid route as the reliable first target; use Bat form later to inspect the remaining ledges rather than waiting for flight before collecting any Gold.
Can dig spots give Gold early?
The spiral floor markings in the Cave of Echoes are Shovel dig spots. The Moonlight Peaks Wiki says cave dig spots can reward ore, Coins, recipes, Charcoal, and other materials. Player reports include occasional early Gold, but the result is random and is not a practical Gold-farming route.
Dig every spiral you pass, but plan upgrades around guaranteed ore deposits after Mermaid form unlocks.
How to Make Gold Bars
Use a Furnace to turn:
- 4 Gold Ore
- 1 Charcoal
into one Gold Bar. The Moonlight Peaks Wiki's Furnace and Farm Helpers tables agree on that recipe.
Keep the first Gold Bars for tool and Fishing Rod upgrades rather than selling them. A Gold Bar can also be a liked or loved gift for several residents, but progression materials are harder to replace than ordinary gifts; use the Gift Guide before giving one away.
Where Is the Crystal Cave?
The Crystal Cave is in Moonlit Pines, immediately west of Fiona's home. Do not confuse it with the Cave of Echoes in Misty Shores.
The entrance is initially sealed by a large boulder. The supported unlock route is:
- open Misty Shores through A Bridge Too Far;
- mine Copper Ore in the Cave of Echoes;
- bring the current Pickaxe and 3 Copper Bars to Ridge for a Copper Pickaxe;
- break the boulder at the Crystal Cave entrance;
- return after upgrading to an Iron Pickaxe to mine Rose Quartz.
Crystal Cave contains Rose Quartz and Moon Crystal. The Museum lists Moon Crystal as a Crystal Cave mining item, so store the first one until you have checked the current collection room.
What to Do with Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz is a progression material, not just a gift.
- Sabrina's Mana Extractor quest asks for 10 Rose Quartz.
- One Rose Quartz becomes one Quartz Dust in the Enchanted Mortar.
- Quartz processing feeds the Glass crafting chain.
- The Firefly Sanctuary and Firefly Pollinator recipes use Rose Quartz.
- Rose Quartz and Moon Crystal appear in several residents' gift preferences.
Keep at least the first 10 Rose Quartz for the Mana Extractor quest, then check the Museum Guide and current Workbench recipes before selling the surplus.
Pickaxe Upgrade Costs Conflict
Ridge upgrades tools at Howling Hammer, open Monday through Friday. The checked release guides agree that each standard Pickaxe upgrade takes the current tool plus 3 Bars of the next metal, but their Coin prices conflict:
| Upgrade | Agreed materials | Published Coin prices |
|---|---|---|
| Rusty to Copper | Rusty Pickaxe + 3 Copper Bars | 1,000 in the checked guides |
| Copper to Iron | Copper Pickaxe + 3 Iron Bars | 2,000 in GameSpot; 4,000 in Bonus Action, TheGamer, and Neoseeker |
| Iron to Gold | Iron Pickaxe + 3 Gold Bars | 3,500 in GameSpot; 16,000 in TheGamer and Neoseeker |
Check Ridge's live shop before saving an exact Coin amount. Do not confuse a guide-price disagreement with a material gate: the current Gold Ore guides consistently require an Iron Pickaxe.
What Mining Materials Should You Save?
Prioritize storage in this order:
- ore and Bars needed for the next Pickaxe tier;
- 10 Rose Quartz for the Mana Extractor route;
- the first Moon Crystal for the Museum;
- Charcoal for Bar processing;
- Refined Stone, Glass, and Planks needed by machines and quests;
- surplus gems only after checking gifts, Workbench recipes, and active journal objectives.
Mining materials unlock more mining materials. Selling the first Iron or Gold stack for short-term Coins can delay both the next tool tier and the machines that improve the rest of the farm.
If the Ore Is Visible but Unreachable
- Gold across water: unlock Mermaid form, then swim across the cave lake.
- Gold above or beyond a ledge: continue the main story toward Bat form.
- Gold node will not break: bring the Iron Pickaxe, not just a Copper Pickaxe.
- Crystal Cave entrance is blocked: use a Copper Pickaxe on the large entrance boulder.
- Rose Quartz node will not break: return with an Iron Pickaxe.
- No Copper or Iron route yet: finish A Bridge Too Far and enter the Cave of Echoes in Misty Shores.
